Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter, shortening, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using), and mix until well combined.

    • Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until a soft dough forms.

  2. Chill Dough: Divide the dough into two discs, wrap them in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or up to 24 hours) to make it easier to handle.

  3. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

  4. Roll and Cut: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/4 inch (6mm) thick. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes, and place them on the prepared baking sheets about 1 inch apart.

  5. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges just begin to turn golden. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

  6. Decorate: Once the cookies are completely cool, decorate with royal icing, buttercream, or sprinkles as desired.
